MCT oil dosage for dogs with seizures
In recent years, there has been increasing interest in the use of medium chain triglycerides (MCT) oil as a potential treatment for seizure disorders in dogs. That why we include it in our Perfect Kibble air dried dog food.
MCT oil is derived from coconut and palm oils and is easily absorbed and metabolized by the body, leading to increased energy production in the form of ketones. Previous studies have shown that a diet high in MCT can lead to improved seizure control in humans with epilepsy, potentially due to its ability to provide an alternative source of fuel for the brain.
One study published in 2017 found that adding MCT oil to the diet of epileptic dogs resulted in a significant reduction in seizure frequency over a period of three months, but did not specifically evaluate dosing. Anecdotal reports suggest that an initial daily dose of 0.5-1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight may be effective for some dogs.
It is important to note that adding MCT oil to your dog’s diet should always be done under the guidance of a veterinarian familiar with its use as a potential treatment option.
Overall, while more research is needed on specific dosing guidelines for using MCT oil in dogs with seizure disorders, we have heard from many customers that Perfect Kibble—our air dried food containing 6% MCT oil—has been effective in reducing seizures in their dog.
